Our Work

Our Mission and Commitment

The Royal Humane Society of Australasia (RHSA) is unwavering in its dedication to recognising and supporting acts of bravery and selflessness across Australia. For nearly 150 years, we have honoured those who risk their lives for others, ensuring that their extraordinary deeds are acknowledged, remembered, and celebrated for generations to come.

Recognition of Bravery

At the heart of the RHSA’s mission is the recognition of individual acts of courage. Every act of bravery, no matter how modest or grand, deserves to be honoured. Our awards, from the prestigious Gold Medal to the Certificate of Merit, formally acknowledge the courage and compassion displayed in moments of crisis. Our volunteer Board, with their unparalleled expertise, ensures that every act of courage is celebrated with the highest integrity.

Support and Relief

Beyond recognition, the RHSA is committed to providing tangible support to those affected by their courageous actions. The RHSA Support Fund offers a one-time financial grant to individuals formally recognised by the Society and who have suffered harm or loss as a result of their bravery. This vital support helps these individuals and their families navigate the challenges that often follow acts of courage.

Preserving and Sharing Stories of Courage

One of the RHSA’s core objectives is to preserve and share the stories of bravery that define our nation. Through meticulous record-keeping and storytelling, we ensure that the legacy of courage inspires future generations. Our archives, documenting nearly 9,000 awards, serve as a testament to the bravery and selflessness that have shaped Australia’s history.

Adapting to Modern Challenges

As we approach our 150th anniversary, the RHSA remains committed to evolving with the times. Recognising the changing nature of bravery, we are broadening our focus to include group citations and community resilience. By honouring both individual and collective acts of courage, the RHSA reflects its ongoing commitment to recognising all forms of bravery, whether on an individual or collective scale.

Future Focus: Building a Safer, More Compassionate Australia

Looking to the future, the RHSA is dedicated to continuing its legacy of recognising and supporting acts of bravery while fostering resilience and compassion within Australian communities. By honouring these qualities, we celebrate those who embody them and inspire others to act with courage and compassion. Our expanded focus on community resilience supports the collective strength that helps Australia overcome adversity and emerge stronger.
