About Us
Our 150-Year Legacy and Mission
Founded in 1874 by John Wilks and George Coppin, the Royal Humane Society of Australasia (RHSA) is not only Australia’s first charitable institution dedicated to recognising and supporting acts of extraordinary bravery but also the first federated institution in the country.
Initially established as The Victorian Humane Society, our organisation was born from a uniquely Australian vision: to honour those who risked their lives to save others at a time when no such recognition existed. As Australia moved towards Federation in 1882, our mission expanded to encompass the entire nation, proudly becoming The Royal Humane Society of Australasia.
From the outset, the RHSA has been more than just a body for recognising bravery; it has been a lifeline for those who displayed courage and selflessness. We were the first in Australia to provide financial assistance to those who risked their lives and their families, ensuring they were supported through the challenges that often followed their acts of bravery. Additionally, we pioneered lifesaving training programs, equipping Australians with the skills needed to protect lives and prevent tragedies in their communities.
For nearly 150 years, the RHSA has stood as a fully Australian institution, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the stories of bravery that define our nation. Our work has laid the foundation for a safer, more compassionate Australia, where the values of courage and selflessness not only serve as a guiding light but also inspire future generations. As the original charity of its kind in Australia, the RHSA’s legacy is one of profound impact, setting the standard for recognising and supporting those who embody the highest ideals of our society.
Royal Patronage
We are honoured to have His Majesty King Charles III as our Patron-in-Chief, supported by the Governor-General, State Governors, Territory Administrators, Police Commissioners and Capital City Lord Mayors across Australia. This esteemed patronage reinforces the significance of our mission and amplifies our capacity to recognise and celebrate acts of bravery throughout the nation. The ongoing support of our Patrons underscores the RHSA’s role as an essential institution within the Australian community.
Achievements and Impact
Since our founding as Australia’s first federated institution, the RHSA has presented nearly 9,000 awards and reviewed thousands more, each a testament to the extraordinary courage and selflessness that define the very best of Australia. At the heart of our mission is our volunteer Board, a dedicated group of individuals who have, for nearly 150 years, selflessly given their time, expertise, and passion to ensure that every act of courage is honoured with the utmost integrity. With over 13,000 acts of bravery meticulously reviewed, the RHSA’s unwavering commitment to celebrating resilience and compassion has left an indelible mark on our nation.
Our work extends beyond recognising individual acts of courage; it’s about fostering a culture of positive community impact and inspiration across Australia. The legacy we uphold is reflected not only in the lives saved and communities supported but in the shared commitment to a safer, more compassionate nation—a legacy made possible by the dedication of our volunteer Board and the generous support of those who believe in the transformative power of courage.
Our Volunteer Board
For nearly 150 years, the RHSA has been guided by a volunteer Board of 13 distinguished individuals, each bringing unparalleled expertise in their respective fields. From police, fire, and ambulance services to SES, lifesaving, forensic science, emergency medicine, disaster response, and beyond, our Board members embody a breadth of knowledge and experience that is vital to our mission. Their roles extend across search and rescue operations, risk management, natural disaster response, crisis and emergency coordination, marine and aviation safety, and psychological support for trauma—ensuring that every act of bravery is assessed with the highest standards of rigour and integrity.
The selfless dedication of these volunteers is the cornerstone of the RHSA. Their commitment transcends professional achievements, reflecting a deep belief in fostering a safer, more compassionate Australia. These remarkable individuals generously give their time and expertise to ensure that courage is not only recognised but celebrated in a way that inspires and strengthens our communities. Their unwavering dedication drives our mission forward, enabling the RHSA to continue its legacy of honouring acts of bravery with precision and respect.
Community Resilience and Future Focus
As the first federated institution in Australia, the RHSA has always been at the forefront of recognising bravery and supporting community resilience. As we look to the future, the RHSA is broadening its focus to include the recognition of collective efforts in responding to emergencies and disasters. Our commitment to community resilience underscores the importance of unity and preparedness in overcoming adversity. By honouring both individual and group contributions, the RHSA seeks to foster a spirit of collaboration and strength within communities across Australia.
The Story of the Rip
Among the many acts of bravery the RHSA has recognised, the famous Rip Rescue stands as a powerful example of selflessness and courage. In the treacherous waters of the Rip, volunteers risked their lives to save others, embodying the very essence of bravery that the RHSA seeks to honour. This story, along with countless others, is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who go above and beyond to protect and save lives. It serves as a reminder of the importance of recognising and supporting those who place others' safety above their own.
